Do I need clean data before this is worth doing?
No — getting the data usable is part of the work, not a prerequisite you have to solve first. Most small businesses have messy data spread across three or four tools, and that is the normal starting point rather than a disqualifier.
How is this different from a dashboard?
A dashboard shows you the numbers someone decided in advance you would want; this answers the question you actually have today. You ask in plain English and get the answer with its workings, instead of hunting for a chart that nearly fits.
